Holi holiday only in Jammu, not Kashmir

Holi is listed as a holiday only for Jammu in the official calendar of
the Jammu and Kashmir government. However, it was not so until a few
years ago. Holi was then marked as a "gazette holiday" for the entire
state. Does the change surprise you? It should not, perhaps.
While revising its working calendar a few years ago, the state
government chose to withdraw Holi from the list of the holidays. The
almanac was curtailed further by taking out from it the holidays
marking several local Muslim festivals such as the Urs of Peer
Dastagir Sahib. Hence, breaking off from the tradition and de-listing
Holi as a holiday does not mirror any sectarian or regional bias. As
was put by an official, the decision was only realistic. Otherwise
also, it would be wrong to name Holi purely as a Hindu festival. It is
a different matter that the vast majority of Kashmiri Muslims have
always seen it as such. Not many Hindus are left in the state outside
the Jammu province. Majority of those who fled the Kashmir Valley
about 16 years ago when the separatist campaign by local Muslim
residents turned violent, now live in-and-around Jammu, the winter
capital. A few thousand Kashmiri Pandits left in the Valley today are
not that keen to celebrate Holi as the rest of the Hindu population in
the state or elsewhere does. Undoubtedly, Hinduism is the faith they
do follow devotedly, but being fundamentally Shivaites, it is
Shivratri, which is the chief festival of the Kashmiri Hindus.
The legend goes that in Kashmir, there were festivals common to both
the Pandits and Muslims but such practices are not in vogue now,
although the two still join each other at the main festivals such as
Id and Shivratri to share the joy. In spite of the "gun culture" that
was unfamiliar to its population until 1989, Kashmir remains a
confluence of many cultures, religious and ethnic groups and a
fascinating amalgam of lifestyles, each with its own unique culture.
But certain realities are too obvious to be set aside or concealed by
falsehood or fabrication. Holi thus is off the list from the major
festivals in Kashmir Valley.
During the schooldays, one would be advised against visiting Maharaj
Gunj, Maharaj Bazaar, Hari Singh High Streets and Amira Kadal during
Holi. Kashmirs affluent Punjabi Hindus lived in and run their
businesses from these localities of Srinagar. "Dont go there or you
will only be spoiling your attire," ones mother had told him once.
The clergy would, in order to discourage Muslim participation in the
Dussehra, caution them that watching the larger than life effigies of
Ravana, his brothers Meghnath and Kumbhkarna, with firecrackers being
set alight by Hindus will have an unfavourable effect on their nikah
(marriage). A fairly large number of Muslim boys and seniors would,
however, defy the diktat.
With the breakout of militancy in the Valley, such festivities have
become a memory of the past.
Like in the past 16 years, Holi will once again find takers mainly
among the troops and other security forces in todays Kashmir. It is
different that Holi is pre-eminently the spring festival of India and
not an exclusively religious event. Not many local Muslims knew that.

religions or a clash of civilizations," Sultan told the Times. "It is
a clash between two opposites, between two eras. It is a clash between
a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that
belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and
backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between
barbarity and rationality."
In the debate, she questioned the religious teachings that prompt
young people to commit suicide in the name of God. "Why does a young
Muslim man, in the prime of life, with a full life ahead, go and blow
himself up?" she told the Times. "In our countries, religion is the
sole source of education and is the only spring from which that
terrorist drank until his thirst was quenched."
Sultan is, she told the Times, "working on a book that -- if it is
published -- it's going to turn the Islamic world upside down. I have
reached the point that doesn't allow any U-turn. I have no choice. I
am questioning every single teaching of our holy book."
The working title of the book is, Sultan told the Times, The Escaped
Prisoner: When God Is a Monster.

At the Lusaka sewage ponds, two teenage boys plunge their hands into the
dark brown sludge, gathering up fistfuls and stuffing it into small plastic
bottles. They tap the bottles on the ground, taking care to leave enough
room for methane to form at the top. A sour smell rises in the hot sun, but
the boys seem oblivious to the stench and the foul nature of their task.
They are manufacturing "Jenkem", a disgusting, noxious mixture made from
fermented sewage. It is cheap, potent and very popular among the thousands
of street-children in Lusaka. When they cannot afford glue or are too scared
to steal petrol, these youngsters turn to Jenkem as a way of getting high.
"It lasts about an hour", says one user, 16-year-old Luke Mpande, who
prefers Jenkem to other substances.

The most interesting thing is that his family, who protect his words/legacy
with an iron fist in a velvet glove, have NOT repudiated this "letter"; they
maintain that since he meant it anyway (from his speech), they have no
need.
