Fuel is very cheap in relative terms compared to fifty years
ago and this had lead to an explosion of single occupant cars .Even if
buses were made free , most people would not use them as they involve
walking to the nearest bus stop.
So what is needed is neigbourhood buses (nb) which would run
just about a mile or less from the home to the nearest bus or train
stop. A fixed flat fare of say $1 would encourage sharing like the
vans at LA airport which take people 50 miles to their destination and
four or five passengers ahsre them .
Even if half the commuters used these nbs it would markedly
reduce congestion. In the center of the cities where the offices are
bus stops are fairly close together so walking is not so much of a
problem there.
